Historic Publication, “Chalfont News,” published on April 1, 1931

The Borough has received a wonderful gift, a piece of history donated by former longtime Chalfont resident and former Council Member, Everett Wick.

Mr. Wick has donated an original edition of the Chalfont News which was published on April 1, 1931.  It is an amazing document that gives a glimpse into the lives and interests of Chalfont residents from over 90 years ago!

Everett’s father, Alexander Albert Wick, was a member of Chalfont’s Board of Trade and he saved the newspaper through the years, most likely because he and Everett’s brother, Albert, were both mentioned in it.  Everett came across the newspaper some years ago while cleaning out his father’s home, and decided to continue to save it.  Recently, when coming across it again, Everett decided to donate it to the Borough for safe keeping and public display for residents to enjoy and see what life was like in Chalfont almost a century ago.

From the Mercer Museum archives:  “The Chalfont News/Bucks County News was a weekly newspaper published in Chalfont, PA, by the Board of Trade.  It was published as the Chalfont News from 1925 to 1932, and as the Bucks County News from 7/28/1932 to 11/23/1933.  It was succeeded by the Bucks County News and Digest (1932-1935), which later became the Bucks County Times (1935-1943).  Mercer Museum Library holdings include issues between 1925 and 1933.  Microfilm.”  Here is a link to the Mercer Museum’s search catalog page.

The Borough would like to extend its thanks to Everett and the Wick family for this special gift.  It was archivally framed by a generous donor, and is on display at Borough Hall, 40 N. Main Street.  Stop by any time Monday through Friday from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM (closed on holidays) to see it in person or check out the links below.
